After twenty five years of business coaching, I have seen it all. I have talked to thousands of business owners across the globe in almost every industry imaginable. I have worked with business owners who are just getting their businesses off the ground and I have worked with leaders who have been in their fields for forty plus years. And I truly love what I do. But as a business coach, it’s not always rainbows and sunshine. There are some clients that no matter how hard we try, it’s never going to be a good fit. Which is why I have one hard and fast rule when it comes to accepting new clients. If they don’t possess this one key thing, I will refuse to take their business. Not a business coach? They must have buy-in.
Before anyone enters into a mentoring or coaching situation they have to have bought into the relationship. They cannot have been volunteered or conscripted into the relationship. And this goes for any mentoring/coaching relationship. It could be with a key team member, a new employee or a mentee. If they aren’t fully committed to working and growing together, then it’s a waste of time for all parties involved.
