Signal says it was only hoping to make advertisements that revealed Instagram users what information of theirs is used to target advertisements for them.

Facebook rejected ads that Signal tried to purchase Instagram that sought to highlight the kinds of data it collects from consumers, the encrypted messaging service stated in a blog article Tuesday.

In a blog post titled The Instagram advertisements Facebook won’t reveal you, Signal said it generated a”multi-variant targeted ad” that would”show you the personal data that Facebook collects about you and sells access to.”

The proposed ads would have informed Instagram users that”You got this advertisement because you’re a K-pop-loving chemical engineer. This advertisement used your place to see you are in Berlin. And you also have a brand new baby. And also you just moved. And you’re really feeling those pregnancy exercises lately,” according to screenshots shared by Signal.

“The advertisement could only show some of the data collected about the viewer which the advertising platform uses. Facebook was not into that idea,” Signal wrote, sharing another screenshot that showed its Instagram ad account had been disabled.

“Being clear about how advertisements use people’s data is seemingly enough to have banned; in Facebook’s world, the only acceptable usage is to hide what you are doing from the audience,” the company wrote in its post.

Facebook taps users’ personal information to precisely target ads to its users — a company that supplied nearly all of its own $ 85.9 billion last year. However, Facebook’s data collection practices have come under scrutiny following a controversy involving Cambridge Analytica, an electronic consultancy with ties into the Trump presidential campaign that obtained data on up to 87 million Facebook users with their consent.

Facebook didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment but in a statement to The Information dismissed the incident as a”stunt” on Signal’s part.

“This is a stunt by Signal, who never even tried to actually run these ads — and we didn’t shut down their ad account for trying to do so,” Facebook told the news outlet.

Signal, which utilizes end-to-end encryption, has a history of battling any thing that asks for consumer information. It was one of several encrypted-messaging apps that saw a huge spike in new users in January after tech mogul Elon Musk urged his viewers to drop Facebook-owned WhatsApp over privacy policy changes that gave it permission to find communications between users and companies within the app for promotion or Facebook advertising.
